Your Yard
First, carefully examine your yard and ask yourself the following questions:
- How big is the yard?
- How thick is the grass?
- Will I mow over just grass, or am I okay with mowing debris like sticks and leaves?
- Are there slopes or hills? If so, how steep?
- Are there obstacles to mow around?
- What do I want to do with the grass clippings?
Low on Yard, Debris, and Slopes, High on Obstacles
If your yard is a quarter of an acre or smaller, it’s on the small side in general. For yards like these, a manual push mower is all the mower you need. They’re super affordable and only move where you push them. They’re also the smallest mowers, which makes them perfect for navigating tight spaces and around obstacles. They won’t be compatible with many attachments, however.
Medium Yard, Thick Grass, and Slopes
For yards between a quarter and a half acre, a self-propelled mower is going to be a lifesaver. They have many of the perks of a manual push mower, though they’re slightly larger and more expensive, and have the added benefit of some speed that doesn’t rely on your muscles. That helps a lot with a larger private yard or a small commercial property. They can handle some attachments, too!
Large Yard, Thick Grass, Hilly
For properties around three quarters of an acre or larger with more serious inclines, you’ll want a riding mower. They’re much more expensive than the manual push mowers, but you get to sit and steer rather than walk and push. They tend to have a top speed of 10 miles per hour and are compatible with most attachments.
Huge Yards, Thickest Grass, Many Obstacles
For the toughest, largest, and most complex yards, you’re going to need a zero-turn mower. These are top-of-the-line and their price reflects that, but with a top speed of 13 mph and the ability to turn on a dime, they’ll get huge lawns with lots of obstacles spic and span in no time.
