Tips for Turf Renovation
When it comes to landscaping, there is much more to lawn care than just mowing and watering. Turf care and renovation is about creating the best possible growing conditions to help your lawn thrive, and there are a few key ways to do that.
Here are some great tips for renovating your turf!
Low Sunlight
Some species of grass thrive in low-light conditions. However, if your grass is completely starved for sunlight, it will not grow properly. The best solution is to prune the surrounding trees and shrubs using the necessary power equipment, to allow more sunlight in. You can also consider planting a different ground cover, in shady parts of your yard. Some great choices for shade include lilyturf and sweet woodruff!
Bare Patches
If your lawn has more than a few bald spots, overseeding your lawn might be the answer. Simply plant additional grass seed directly into the existing turf, without tearing up the soil. This method works best when applied to the entire lawn.
If you have just a few bare patches here and there, you can consider taking a more direct approach. Start by removing the damaged section of your lawn, including some of the healthy surrounding turf. Next, level the soil and add some ready compost or starter fertilizer. If you choose to apply grass seed, make sure there is some light ground cover, and keep the area moist for 2 to 4 weeks until the grass germinates. If you use sod, remember to cut a section to fill up your empty patch and continue to water the area until the sod takes root!
Crabgrass
Crabgrass and other unwanted grasses can be a nuisance, but the good news is that they can’t survive the winter cold. With that said, it’s best to take care of crabgrass right away before it can wreak havoc on your lawn. Applying herbicide can usually eliminate crabgrass – just make sure to choose an appropriate product and lawn equipment that won’t harm your desired grasses. Diligent mowing and higher, more frequent cuts will keep your lawn healthy and discourage new growth from taking hold!
Pests
As far as lawn care goes, pests are the worst-case scenario. Pests not only devour your grass, but they can also attract vermin to your property. If you notice signs of pest damage, you may need to hire a professional pest control service.
While you have the option of treating your lawn with pesticides, these products can sometimes do more harm than good. Be very judicious in your use of pesticides, and apply them at either the beginning or the end of the growing season, to achieve the best results!
